“Sinners” is a highly layered film that combines three distinct narratives – a Southern Gothic tale, a noir drama, and a horror story – which converge into one cohesive story. The film leaves more questions than answers, particularly regarding the origins of the enigmatic vampire protagonist, Remmick.
Several hints are scattered throughout the film about Remmick’s origins, including his accent and Irish dancing. Notably, Remmick’s supernatural abilities differ from those of the vampire he sires, and include red eyes, flight, and shapeshifting. The gold he gives to Mary before siring her is another significant detail, as angels are often associated with gold.
A pivotal moment occurs when Remmick remains unaffected as Sammie begins to pray the Lord’s Prayer. This clue suggests that Remmick might be a fallen angel, and his cultural ties to Ireland could be rooted in ancient pagan deities worshipped by the Celts.
