ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals opened the offseason with a series of measured roster moves that underscore a transitional approach under new leadership, shaped in part by the loss of ace Sonny Gray.
Gray’s departure leaves a significant void at the top of the rotation after he served as the club’s most reliable starter, prompting the Cardinals to prioritize pitching depth and flexibility early in the winter. The team’s most notable addition was right-hander Dustin May, signed to a short-term deal as St. Louis looks to stabilize a rotation that struggled with consistency beyond Gray last season.
The Cardinals also made several depth moves, re-signing catcher Yohel Pozo and adding pitchers Scott Blewett and Sem Robberse on minor league contracts with invitations to spring training. The additions provide organizational insurance behind the plate and increased competition on the pitching staff as roster decisions loom.
Reliever Shawn Armstrong was among the veterans to depart, and trade discussions involving established players continue as the club evaluates its options.
The moves come as Chaim Bloom takes over baseball operations, bringing a value-driven, analytical approach to a roster reset. With Gray gone and larger decisions potentially ahead, the early offseason activity suggests the Cardinals are focused on reshaping their pitching staff while maintaining flexibility for future moves.
