2025 was supposed to be the year of rebuilding for the St. Louis Cardinals. However, the new look Cardinals have surged to a 3-0 with a sweep of Minnesota twins.

The Cardinals infusion of young talent to a mix of capable veteran players overwhelmed the Twins with timely hitting, speed, and strong defense. The Cards’ struggles in those regards last season led to change although few thought the turnover would have such success early in the campaign.

The Cardinals vowed a fire sale after a second losing season in which attendance was low because of a fan base in rebellion more than lack of interest, spurred the Cardinals for change. In the offseason the Cardinals announced a shakeup in the front office, and a potential fire sale to trade their veteran stars for more young talent. The Cardinals lone all-star, Ryan Helsley was placed on the trading block, and perennial all-star third baseman Nolan Arenado. The Cardinals’ former MVP, Paul Goldschmidt left in free agency.

A Helsley trade never happened after being shopped around. Arenado vetoed a trade to the Houston Astros before showing up to spring training with the Cardinals. The two players played well in the opening series gelling with younger reinforcements.

The Cardinals young core looks to have a resurgence after the 2024 season when most spent time in minor leagues. Jordan Walker, Victor Scott II, and Nolan Gorman struggled at the plate last season while showing upside with raw talent, each being demoted to AAA. Masyn Winn established him as one of better shortstops in the Nation League, coming in second in gold glove at the position. Winn’s only struggles were errors.

This season has been all smiles early. The biggest question is canning the Cardinals remain consistent in the Odessey that is the MLB season.
