The Rams third relocation returning to Los Angeles was the tip of the iceberg in this relocation saga. The Chargers and the Raiders seem to be inevitably in the twilight of franchise history in their inaugural homes.
The Raiders are looking to move south to a city in the desert. Sin City seems like a place the Silver and Black could fit quite well. As of today, they have the support of some influential owners. Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft have both came out in support in recent weeks. I am sure both for their reasons. Jones probably does not want the Raiders anywhere near San Antonio. The Raiders will need 24 votes out 32 owners to move.
The Chargers situation is even more of a mess. The Chargers need a two-thirds vote to fund a stadium-convention center hybrid; this did not work out too well for St. Louis. There is also a competing measure on the ballot. And did I forget to mention the top industry in the city is against this plan?
I believe relocation is, in general, bad for the sport. You’re losing a market and history of each city. The NFL’s chase for stadiums and money will eventually have a team move that they don’t want to, i.e., the Browns or the Rams.
The Rams relocation was first since the Oilers relocated from Houston in 1996. We will not probably have to wait 20 years for another.
