National Football League athletes are in control of their careers more than ever.

Le’veon Bell’s hold out last summer has caused a chain reaction with the NFL. Since many high profile players looking for more money or better change of scenery have a better understanding of their worth.

After a lengthy hold out from training camp, Dallas Cowboys Running Back Ezekiel Elliott signed a $90 million contract with the team. Pass rusher Jadaveon Clowney refused a franchise tag from his then team the Houston Texans and received a requested trade to the Seattle Seahawks. Los Angeles Chargers Running Back Melvin Gordon training camp holdout has expanded into the regular season, and trade rumors are now being heard around the league for Gordon.

Antonio Brown’s movement with three teams is mostly due to his recent conduct, but a superstar forcing himself not only away from one but two teams is unprecedented. In recent NFL history, Terrell Owens was suspended for an entire season by the Philadelphia Eagles for conduct detrimental to the team.

A superstar can now request or “will” themselves off of a team creating a new era of players with better understanding of their intangible worth. NBA superstar Paul George made waves by asking for a trade to Clippers after signing a multi-year contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
