The national media is buzzing about the free agent signings by the NFC East teams and the Dallas Cowboys’ inaction. However, all four NFC East teams still have large holes to fill in their rosters.
The Dallas Cowboys did not sign one player and lost veteran players on the first day of free agency. The Cowboys’ lack of urgency is leading to a media frenzy with the continued soap opera in Dallas.
However, the NFC East’s major flaws will continue into the NFL draft and the 2024 NFL season.
- Dallas Cowboys: Plagued with personnel and salary cap issues, the Cowboys are trying to extend Dak Prescott’s contract and re-sign Ceedee Lamb and Micah Parsons. They are also looking for solutions at running back and linebacker.
- Philadelphia Eagles: Lost two hall of famers to retirement in Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox. They have an aging defense in the secondary and under-size at linebacker. They acquired Saquon Barkley through free agency. Saquon is a good player but is very inconsistent, primarily due to injury. Saquon is joining a pass-heavy offense with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
- Washington Commanders: Basically lacking talent and depth across their depth chart, new head coach Dan Quinn seems to want to win now with blueprints from his last gig with the Cowboys. The Commanders signed two Cowboys free agents, Tyler Biadasz and Dorance Armstrong. The Commanders are looking for talent on both offense and defense.
- New York Giants: The Giants have the same issues as the Commanders. They seemingly got worse this off-season. They lost Saquon Barkley and Xavier Mckinney. The Giants have a quarterback problem, so even if they draft a new franchise quarterback, they’ll still have to pay Daniel Jones.
We’ll have to look to the NFL draft to see who has the better roster come training camp.
